Kode With Klossy: Brain Breaks Ident
Coding is for Girls
One summer i collaborated with Kode With Klossy to create this animated intro bumper for Brain Breaks, a specialized component of the comp-sci camp program for girls and non-binary youth.
My motion graphics content heralded a video segment encouraging all to step away from the core material behind their keyboards and rest for a moment, mitigating mental overload (while also getting to hear a quick word or two from Klossy's brand partners).
Art Direction
The client provided a library of fun graphics, from which were cast the supporting characters of the piece. I added a few more, and also designed a set of complementary geometric motifs that would activate negative space and reinforce the vibe in a secondary capacity.
Meanwhile, i pre-rendered several animated background textures which could be applied to my design comps and re-purposed from shot to shot. These loops imbued depth and a sense of dreamy, nostalgic ephemerality.
Animation Direction
The initial inspiration is from Jimmy Neutron's "Brain Blast" ability. In a way, this is the exact opposite.
The attentional retreat through vivid layers of summertime imagery gives the viewer an impression of taking a mental micro-vacation, i.e. a break for the brain. The mix of glitchy action and soft textural evolution reflects the dynamic learning environment.
My earlier solutions relied on a fairly literal extension of the brand graphics— with hard lines, solid colors, and minimal texture...
...but in the end, the gradient texturing played a decisive role in building the right aesthetic.
